Matt Staniek Named One of Big Issue's Changemakers of 2025
Today, we are thrilled to share that our very own Matt has been named one of Big Issue’s Top 100 Changemakers of 2025! The national publication highlighted key achievements, including Save Windermere’s success in securing the largest ever investment in Windermere—a staggering £190 million—thanks to an almost four-year-long campaign. This annual celebration honours individuals and organisations who dedicate themselves to making life better for others, exemplifying selflessness, innovation and resilience.
The Changemakers list is curated by Big Issue readers, who nominate those working tirelessly at a community level and beyond to drive positive change. It showcases a remarkable network of individuals planting seeds for new growth while holding together society’s safety net. This year’s selection highlights some of the best among us, and Matt’s inclusion reflects his relentless efforts to protect England’s largest lake. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Matt and gratitude to all who continue to support our mission. Together, we can protect Windermere for generations to come.
Reflecting on the recognition, Matt said:
"It’s amazing to be acknowledged in this way, but the campaign wouldn’t be where it is today without my incredible partner Amanda, who has supported me from the very beginning, and the unbelievable Finn Pattinson, whose dedication has helped the campaign reach heights we never thought possible."
Earlier this year, Big Issue shone a spotlight on the campaign, but this recognition is truly an honour. While we take a moment to celebrate this achievement, it does not detract from the ultimate goal: Labour must commit to fully ending sewage pollution in England’s largest lake, Windermere, once and for all.
This lake belongs to the people of this nation, and protecting it is a fight we will never abandon.
The fight for our lake grows stronger.
